Preceptor Payments
By agreeing to teach a McMaster University medical student or postgraduate trainee (resident), you have joined a strong and dedicated network of health professionals supporting a high-quality, community-based clinical education program within the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
Community preceptors are physicians in the community who offer rich and varied learning environments for medical learners. They are critical to the sustainability of medical education in smaller urban and rural communities. McMaster University values these contributions, and through funding from the Ministry of Health is able to provide a stipend to community preceptors for eligible teaching activities.
The Mac-CARE Program does not fund the following teachers and/or teaching activities:
- Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) trainees including Residents (PGY) and Clinical Fellows (CF).
- Anatomists, Social Workers, Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists etc.
- Non-clinical activities (i.e., research or reading).
About
McMaster University has moved to an automated system to support clinical teaching activities eligible for funding through the Mac-CARE (McMaster Community and Rural Education) Program, the Department of Family Medicine, Waterloo Regional Campus, and Niagara Regional Campus. Stipends are paid at the rate of $250.00 per week for eligible teaching activities, in accordance with provincial standards. Teaching activities can include, clinical rotation-based supervision, and/or academic teaching (academic half days lectures, procedural skills sessions, tutorials, etc.).
The Preceptor Payment Module has been created in MedSIS (McMaster’s Medical School Information System) to allow users to view, approve and distribute payments to supervisors. All learner information related to their rotations is brought directly from MedSIS scheduling through the data connector.
For registered preceptors, the payments will be made through an electronic funds transfer (EFT) or direct deposit on a monthly cycle. If you’re not registered, please register your payment profile in MedSIS – Preceptor Payments. Cheques will no longer be issued for preceptor payments.
